Dash Cam Video Reveals Drunk Driving Arrest of Deputy

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich.

New dash cam video is shedding light on what happened the night Portage police busted a Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputy for allegedly driving drunk.

April Barfoot was found in an empty bank parking lot with her door open and car running just after 2 a.m. on November 15th. Barfoot, who was off-duty at the time, told police that she was feeling sick.

Police spoke to Barfoot for several minutes as she sat in the car. During that time she did admit she’d been drinking “a little bit”.  Officers later helped the deputy out of the car, where she refused to take any field sobriety tests. Barfoot instead asked to call an attorney.

The 34-year-old deputy is facing a charge of “Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated” first offense.

Barfoot is due in court for a pre-trial hearing on November 29th.

So… She was stopped in a parking lot at the time? And she wasn't stopped for bad driving? Video doesn't look great, but how long was she there? Maybe she had drank and decided to pull over when her blood alcohol level rose to a point where she thought it was not wise to drive. That would have been the responsible thing to do, even though it virtually guaranteed that she'd have police contact… and as a cop she'd know that. It's pathetic that we encourage drivers who find themselves to be drunk to continue drive, and it certainly makes our roads less safe.

If you drink and drive and discover that you might be a little too tipsy to drive, I guess the police want you to press on to avoid getting arrested. Stupid.

If anything it proves she is not guilty of driving while intoxicated.
