A new law to decriminalize marijuana in Grand Rapids takes effect in just over a week.

On Election Day, voters passed proposal two to decriminalize marijuana. Right now it’s a misdemeanor, a fine and possible jail time if someone’s caught with the drug. A misdemeanor gives an offender a criminal record.

The new law makes illegal possession a civil infraction, similar to a speeding ticket.

Grand Rapids city attorney says Thursday, December 6th an ordinance will take effect to exercise the new law.

The attorney’s office says it’s working with other city departments to hash out specifics within the ordinance.
