GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- Our West Michigan is holding two events to remember the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Today is the 71st anniversary of the attack on the naval base in Hawaii.

The 23rd annual Pearl Harbor Memorial Observance will take place from noon to one on Friday afternoon. It will be held at the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Center on Monroe street in downtown Grand Rapids. A proclamation from the State of Michigan and Kent County will be read. Senators Levin and Stabenow have also sent letters to be read at the ceremony. Three local men who served and died at Pearl Harbor will be remembered. There will also be a choir singing patriotic songs.

The second event happens at East Kentwood High School from 6:30 to 8 on Friday evening. Students from Kent Innovation High School and East Kentwood will present biographical documentaries of local World War II veterans. The veterans will have a chance to walk the red carpet before the screening. A performance by the East Kentwood Philharmonic Orchestra will also be a part of the show. The event is free but any donations collected will go to the Grand Rapids Veteran’s Home.
