LANSING, Mich. –  Beginning Friday, Dec. 21, Michigan State Police troopers will join together with other highway patrol agencies for annual Lifesaver weekend.

It’s an effort created by operation C.AR.E. (combined accident reduction effort) that will bring agencies together from across the country and Canada to make traveling safer.

“The weekend before Christmas is typically a very busy travel period with shopping and celebrations, and troopers will take a zero-tolerance approach to intoxicated drivers, unbelted motorists, and those who are driving in an unsafe manner,” said Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the MSP.  “The State Police would like this to be a safe and enjoyable holiday season for everyone.”

Operation C.A.R.E. Lifesaver weekend begins at 6 p.m. Friday.  It will run through midnight on Sunday, Dec. 23.

Last year, eight people were killed in traffic accidents during this weekend.

C.A.R.E. hopes that by stepping up patrols, some of these will be prevented.
