HOLLAND, Mich. — A 45-year-old man could face up to life in prison after being arraigned Christmas Day for an attempted armed robbery in Holland on Monday morning.

On Tuesday, Raymon Martin, Gaytan, 45, of the Holland area was charged with assault with intent to rob while armed with a dangerous weapon — a felony punishable by a sentence of up to life in prison.

He is being held on $25,000 bond in the Ottawa County Jail.

The incident occurred at 8:45 a.m. Monday when a woman kicked a man who was trying to rob her with a utility knife in the Meijer parking lot early and scared the man away.

According to police reports the woman was getting out of her car when the robber, who was armed with a box cutter, told her to get back in the car. After being ordered back in the car, she kicked the man. In the process, she was cut by the knife but did not require medical attention.

Another report of an armed robbery occurred very close to this incident. Police say it happened in the same parking lot.

Around 10:40 a.m., the suspect returned to the Meijer parking lot. That’s when police took the 45-year-old man into custody. Police said they also found the man’s vehicle and evidence in the case.

Anyone who knows anything about the case is being asked to contact the Holland Department of Public Safety or Silent Observer at 877-88-SILENT.
