ZEELAND, Mich. — Police captured a 30-year-old man who led them on a chase through Zeeland and Holland before hitting another vehicle and then a tree on Christmas Eve.

At 4:15 p.m. Monday, the Zeeland Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on Chicago Drive near 120th Avenue.  The vehicle failed to stop and began fleeing westbound on Chicago Drive.  A high-speed chase ensued and Holland Department of Public Safety officers assisted as the vehicle entered the city of Holland.

Police said the suspect disregarded many traffic control devices.

The vehicle traveled westbound on Chicago Drive, southbound on Waverly Avenue and westbound on 16th Street. At 16th Street and Columbia Avenue it struck another vehicle, causing a minor injury to the occupant.

The vehicle then fled from that accident scene westbound on 16th Street followed by southbound on College Avenue, westbound on 19th Street, northbound on Central Avenue and westbound on 17th Street.  The driver lost control and the vehicle hit a tree on 17th Street near Harrison Avenue.

The driver fled from the vehicle on foot and was spotted a short time later near 21st Street and Cleveland Avenue, where he was taken into custody.

The driver — a 30-year-old man — was transported by the Zeeland Police Department to the Ottawa County Jail.  He was wanted on a warrant for parole absconding as well as a bench warrant from another jurisdiction.

The man will be arraigned in court Wednesday on charges of driving with a suspended license and felony fleeing and eluding.
