GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –  The woman who was locked up for open murder has been freed from the Kent County Jail, and according to the jail, her open murder charges were also dismissed.

“Taneesha Smith was released because it’s still under investigation.  She’s claiming self-defense.  She was released because we can’t hold her indefinitely.  We are not in a position to charge her at this point,” Kent County Prosecutor Bill Forsyth said.

According to police, Smith was arrested on Christmas night after she shot and killed her boyfriend in her home on Leonard Street Northeast.

FOX 17 News learned that in previous years, two other women filed separate protection orders against the shooting victim, Darwin DeMarcus Weathers, and that those orders came out of Saginaw County.

At last check, the reason for Smith’s release is unknown, but FOX 17 will stay in touch with the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office to determine the reason.
