GRAND RAPIDS, Mich-

This time year is always busy for the people at Mel Trotter Ministries.  Starting in August, the donations start rolling in as people start thinking about the upcoming tax season. One of the biggest things people can donate to Mel Trotter is a car.

“We are still hoping donors will remember us at the end of the year if they want to donate a car to charity, because 100% of the proceeds go right back into the mission,” Daniels said.

Tom Rosenbach is Managing Partner for Beene Garter. He says after the first of the year, the tax law will change. The new guidelines aren’t available yet, leaving people wondering what’s going to happen.

“Most individuals now are saying, I’m going to take my contribution now, I know what my tax rate is now. I’ll lower my tax bill this year and I’ll deal with the new tax law as it comes,” Rosenbach said.

Rosenbach goes on to says they won’t typical adjust the tax rate, but limit the amount you can deduct.

“So it’s kind of a clever way to say, we didn’t raise your tax rate, but we cut your deductions so we didn’t increase your tax bill,” Rosenbach said.

According to Rosenbach, what it comes down to is Grand Rapids is a giving community.

“Here in Grand Rapids, people don’t give out of compulsion, they give because they love giving. This is a very generous community,” Daniels said.
