GR Public Museum Offering Free Astronomy Classes

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Public Museum announced that it will offer free astronomy classes to the public starting this month.

Specialists from the museum’s Chaffee Planetarium have partnered with members of the Grand Rapids Amateur Astronomical Association (GRAAA) and are offering three Saturday afternoon classes at the Schuler Books and Music location at 2660 28th St.

The program is called “Astronomy as a Hobby, Steps to Better Enjoyment.”

The classes are scheduled for the following dates:

  • Jan. 19: 1 p.m. – “The Ever Changing Sky” with Dave DeBruyn — What to look for and when, sky motions and seasonal attractions during 2013 for the naked eye and telescope.
  • Feb. 16: 1 p.m. – “Sorting it Out” with Jim Foerch — Recommended telescopes, guide books, star charts and online resources along with stargazing tips.
  • Mar. 16: 1 p.m. – “Looking Up & Ahead” with Greg Comegys — Advice for upgrading equipment and getting the most out of astronomy as a hobby.

The event also features a “Telescope Tune-up Clinic” and attendees are invited to bring their personal telescopes for adjustments and minor repairs. The clinic will run from 2:15 p.m. until 3 p.m. after each class.
