GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Police have charged a man for Monday’s murder of 23-year-old Anthony Tompkins.
While acting on a tip in a separate case, which was the double homicide investigation of the couple killed in Kentwood, police were in the area of Cherry Street and Jefferson.
There, an officer saw a suspicious man duck in between two cars. That man was arrested and police said they recovered the gun used to kill Tompkins.
According to online records, the man arrested is Ali Sharif Gray, 18.
He was arrested on charges of a weapon offense, robbery and homicide.
Chief Belk said both Tompkins and the suspect have known ties to gangs but believe the shooting was over an internal conflict between the two people.
Just after 10:00 p.m. Monday, police were called to Sweet street and Diamond Ave and found Tompkins shot to death.
Police said both Tompkins and Gray were at Tompkins Grand Rapids home just minutes before the shooting.
