GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.,– Despite the snow and blustery cold, many people in our West Michigan kept Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream alive this Monday.

Marchers at Aquinas College bundled up and brought out the signs as they walked across campus in honor of the civil rights icon.

“I love the fact that it’s cold and windy and snowy, because I think it reminds us even more of the sacrifices people made,” said Latoya Booker, the Director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion at Aquinas College.

Indoors, dozens of people showed up at Grand Rapids Community College for the annual celebration of Dr. King.

Program speakers highlighted Martin Luther King’s heroism and strong message of non-violence. Chaka White, a member of GRCC’s student government feels the message is more important than ever now given the recent string of violence in the city.

“Wake up and be not only the change that we want in the world, but the change that we need,” said White.

A march planned at GRCC was cancelled due to the weather. Monday marked the 27th year for the celebration.
