WAYLAND, Mich. — Early morning drivers were greeted with road conditions that were similar to Tuesday morning: icy spots and some snow ruts on the highways and country roads.

Crashes continued in the overnight hours before the morning commute began.

US-131 northbound was closed at the 142nd Avenue exit due to a crash. Help was called around 4:45 a.m. to an injury accident north of that exit in Allegan County. The highway was reopened shortly before 6 a.m.

Earlier, westbound I-94 was closed at the Paw Paw Exit 60 due to a jackknifed semi. The highway was reopened before 5 a.m.

The crashes picked up in pace even before 6 a.m. A pickup rolled onto its top on northbound US-31 south of Hayes Street in the Grand Haven area. And an occupant was pinned into a vehicle in a crash on westbound I-96 a mile west of exit 19.

There was no single stretch of highway worse than any other when it came to accidents. Speeds on expressways dropped below 50 miles per hour after 7 a.m., and traffic slowed to a crawl on southbound US-131 from West River Drive to downtown Grand Rapids.
