Officials from the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum say as soon as they heard about the shooting in Newtown Connecticut, they knew they wanted to help.

“Actually, the 9-year-old son of one of our board members was the first one to get us thinking. He asked the question, what can we do to help?” Dean said.

One of the board members got on his phone and found out Everwonder Children’s Museum in Newtown was in the process of raising money to build a children’s museum for the area. They quickly decided they were going to contribute to this fund, by donating $1 from each admission fee collected on Saturday, and also setting up a donation box were people could donate more.

“The tragedy affected us all in many, many ways and nothing will come close to really helping that, but we wanted to do something to help. We know that play has a great healing impact,“ Dean said.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum and Grand Rapids Art Museum are also joining in by donating a portion of their processed as well.

“Knowing that they have a place to play, knowing that they have a place where kids can be kids, in a safe environment is going to be very meaningful for us,” Dean said.
