DECATUR, Mich. – A Decatur police officer fired his weapon at a suspect after a man allegedly aimed his gun at the officer.

On Monday, the officer was called to a domestic assault complaint, located at 202 West Bronson Street in the Village of Decatur.

The caller, a 23-year-old man, allegedly told officials that he had a gun. Officials said they heard screaming in the background. That’s when they said the man threatened to kill everyone.

When the officer arrived on the scene he located the suspect near the intersection of South Williams and Bronson streets.

According to police, the suspect was walking eastbound on Bronson Street when the officer exited his patrol car and ordered the man to stop. After ignoring the officer’s order, the suspect allegedly kept walking and pointed his right arm at the officer. Unable to see what was in the suspects hand, the officer got back into his patrol unit and continued the pursuit.

Nearing the intersection of Bronson and S. Phelps streets, the officer got back out of his vehicle and attempted to make contact with the suspect again. This time, the man allegedly told the officer he wanted to hurt him and began to swing a weapon toward the officer.

The officer said he fired a single shot at the suspect after another order for the man to drop his weapon went ignored.

The man fell to his knees, allegedly throwing the weapon toward a nearby building.

The officer said the suspect continued to fight while he was attempting to make the arrest.

The suspect was eventually subdued and taken into police custody.

Police recovered the weapon , which they said was Ruger pistol.

Both the suspect and the officer remained uninjured during the incident.

The suspect is being held at the Van Buren County Jail pending charges.
