CRYSTAL, Mich. — A man riding a snowmobile on Crystal Lake in Montcalm County fell through the ice along with his snowmobile.

David Lawrence Johnson, 51, of Woodland, was quickly rescued when people nearby threw him a rope and pulled him out of the water. He was only in the water a few minutes, said the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Department.

The mishap took place around 3:50 p.m. Saturday, and rescue workers were dispatched when a 911 call was received by county dispatch.

The water is 20 feet deep where the snowmobile sank. There are plans to retrieve it from the lake.

Johnson was taken to Carson City Hospital to be treated. He was later released.
