KALAMAZOO, Mich.– Kalamazoo College students are gathering at the campus chapel on Sunday to remember one of their classmates who died suddenly over the weekend.

Emily Stillman,19, passed away from complications due to bacterial meningitis, according to campus officials.

Stillman, a sophomore from West Bloomfield, reported feeling sick early Friday morning and was taken to Bronson Hospital. She passed away on Sunday with her family near her side.

The campus of roughly 1,400 students was informed of the situation on Friday and students who had contact with the young woman are being treated with oral medication.

“We started reaching out to roommates and classmates on Friday,  not only to inform them,  but to make sure they got  medication in case they’ve been exposed,” said Kalamazoo College Spokesman Jeff Palmer.

Stillman lived in Crissey Residence Hall and those students have been contacted.

Campus officials are working with the Kalamazoo County Health Department on the issue.

A letter went out to the campus community reminding them that anyone suffering from a bad headache, fever, or neck pains should seek health care immediately.
