NEW ORLEANS — It was a Super Bowl full of story lines, but an unexpected one took over Super Bowl 47.

The Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 in a game that was marred by a power outage that forced a 34-minute delay and seemed to change the direction that the game was headed.

Baltimore led San Francisco 21-6 at halftime thanks to three touchdown passes from quarterback Joe Flacco. Then Jacoby Jones took back the opening kickoff of the second half a Super Bowl-record 108 yards to give the Ravens a 28-6 lead. But on the ensuing drive, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans suffered a power outage that took out half the lights and forced a long delay that seemed to zap the Ravens momentum.

San Francisco quickly scored on its next three drives to make it a 28-23 game. Baltimore would add a field goal early in the fourth quarter to give the Ravens a 31-23 lead.

The 49ers found the endzone again with 10:04 left in the fourth quarter when Colin Kaepernick scored a 15-yard rushing touchdown. The two-point conversion failed however to keep the Ravens in the lead 31-29.

Baltimore would add another field goal, but the Niners would have one more shot at the lead. Under two minutes left in the 4th quarter, the 49ers had the ball on the Ravens 5-yard line facing a fourth-and-goal. Kaepernick’s pass to Michael Crabtree fell incomplete however and the Ravens took over on downs. Baltimore ran down the clock and took a safety late to run more time off the clock to give the 49ers their final two points.

Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco was named the game’s MVP after completing 22-of-33 passes for 287 yards and the three first half scores. Kaepernick finished the game 16-of-28 for 302 yards. He threw for a touchdown and ran for another but also threw one interception.

This was the first Super Bowl ever that saw brothers coaching against each other as Ravens head coach John Harbaugh beat his younger brother Jim, the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.
