Local Soldier Honored, Laid To Rest
West Michigan honors and says goodbye to Sgt. Mark Schoonhoven. The Plainwell native passed away in a Texas hospital last month, after being in a coma for five weeks. While serving in Afghanistan, Schoonhoven’s unit was hit with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), his father says the 38-year-old solider suffered severe brain and spinal injuries.
