WASHINGTON — The online version of the conservative magazine National Review says West Michigan Rep. Justin Amash (R-Cascade) is thinking of running for Sen. Carl Levin’s seat.

Levin’s term expires in 2014, and he has not yet said if he will run for reelection.

“Several libertarian activists say the 32-year-old congressman is intrigued by the idea,” said the online article.

The article quotes a “Republican operative familiar with Michigan politics,” who says Amash might run if Levin decides against a bid for reelection. Levin was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1978.

Amash is described as “the Libertarian bad boy of the House GOP” due to his criticism of House Republican leaders and frequent votes against leadership.

The prospect of an Amash candidacy is described by National Review as alarming to state Republican leaders, because they are hoping to find a more established candidate.
