abby starsHUDSONVILLE, Mich. –The Grand Valley Stars prep hockey organization will host a charity hockey game this month to help a family in need. The two prep teams in the program will scrimmage to raise funds in support of 20-month-old Abby Greer, who has been battling brain cancer since March, 2012.

The type of cancer that Abby has is called an Ependymoma, a rare cancerous brain tumor. After being diagnosed at 10 months old, Abby underwent a 12-‐hour surgery to remove the tumor. However, the cancer returned. Her oncologists atHelen DeVos Children’s Hospitalhave declared her disease inoperable due to the very delicate areas of her spinal column and brain in which they are located.

“After hearing about Abby, our players wanted to do something to help her and her parents in addition to raising awareness about Abby’s condition,” said the Stars’ coach, Nick Marckini. “The players decided that like winning a hockey game, fighting cancer takes a team.”

Admission to the game will be a $2 donation, including a free open skate following the game.

The game to benefit Abby Greer held on Feb. 28th at 7:00 PM at Georgetown Ice Arena in Hudsonville, MI.

“Abby’s Stars” hockey jerseys, which will be worn during the game, may be purchased for $10 each which includes admission. The team also will host a silent auction and raffle at the arena, including autographed Detroit Red Wings photographs, handcrafted jewelry and other items. All proceeds will go to the Greer family via the Race For the Cure program.
