MUSKEGON, Mich.- A crucial piece of U.S. World War II history sits in Muskegon. The USS Silversides Submarinewas commissioned shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, finishing 14 combat war patrols. Silversides is credited with sinking 23 Japanese ships, too.

In 1946, it was taken out of service, moving to Chicago and used by the Navy Reserve until 1969. Then, in 1987, the submarine made its way to Muskegon, put on display. A few years later, in 1993, it was joined by U.S. Coast Guard Cutter McLane.

Thousands of people come through the two museums and some even take up the opportunity to stay overnight. USS Silversides can hold up to 72 people and the USCGC McLane can hold around 38 overnight. Reservations are required by calling (231)755-1230.

Running until April 22, the museums have teamed up with Muskegon Community College, for a lecture series for the public about World War II. They are every Monday evening, starting at 7p.m. and run about an hour and a half.
