COVERT, Mich. – The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissioner will be taking a tour of the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant on Tuesday — and ahead of his tour, concerned citizens had a chance to voice their opinions.

Over the past few years, there have been several unscheduled shutdowns at the plant for a variety of issues, including cooling system malfunctions and minor leaks.

Since then, there’s been a grassroots push to get the plant shut down for good.

On Monday night, the group of concerned citizens met with NRC Commissioner William Magwood.

“We cannot run the plant until it breaks,” said Kraig Shultz, one of the residents sharing his concerns.  “We have to be in a proactive mode, we have to do the repairs before it breaks.”

“I think it’s fair to say that we are paying closer attention to this plant than is normal,” said Commissioner Magwood.  “We are putting many more inspectors in place, not because we think there’s an immediate danger, but because we want to make sure the work at the plant to improve conditions is carried out correctly.”
