Mary Tornga croppedKENT COUNTY, Mich. — Wyoming police have confirmed that a body pulled from the Grand River on Tuesday is Mary Tornga, 51, of Grandville.

Tornga had been missing since early Sunday morning.

Tornga was last seen just off the Market Avenue exit on westbound I-196 around 1:00 a.m. Sunday. Police say she and her husband were coming home from a party in Grand Rapids. They were having an argument when they pulled over and Tornga got out of the car.

Investigators say two kayakers reported seeing a body in the water around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.

“The body was gotten out of the water and it was confirmed that it was the body of Mary Tornga,”  Wyoming Police Capt. Kim Koster says.

Tornga’s body was recovered in Wyoming – just over a mile from the Market Avenue exit.

An autopsy was performed Wednesday morning, but police are still waiting on results.

“Our investigators are really just trying to determine what led up to the incident and how she got in the water,” Koster says.

Tornga was married for 24 years to her husband, Greg. They had a grown daughter together.

Tornga’s family in Grandville declined comment on Wednesday.

“I would like to say to the family – our condolences to Mary’s family,” Koster says. “Our heart goes out to them. We know that they suffered a great loss. We feel it’s our obligation to investigate to the fullest degree and be able to answer questions that they might have.”

Koster says police are still looking for anybody who might have information on the final hours of Tornga’s life. If you do, call Grandville Police, Wyoming Police, or Silent Observer.
