A State Of Emergency Has Been Declared In Lowell

LOWELL, Mich- From the Lowell Police Department:  Based on current predictions from the National Weather Service, the City of Lowell is bracing for another 1.5 feet of flooding along the Grand River. The river was at 18.5 feet at 8 a.m. this morning and is expected to rise to 19.5 feet by 10 p.m. this evening and crest to 20 feet Sunday afternoon.

M-21 (Main Street) east of the Flat River in the City of Lowell is closed. Drivers are encouraged to take an alternate route. (Listed below)

Jackson Street and the bridge over the Grand River is closed.

Crews are working to keep Hudson Street between the Grand River and Bowes Road open. Hudson Street is the second north/south bridge over the Grand River.

The City of Lowell is limiting traffic to city residents, service workers, utility workers and first responders.

Power is anticipated to be shut down for all Lowell Light and Power customers east of the Flat River sometime Sunday morning. The power will remain off until the water recedes to a safe level which could be a number of days.

The detour is as follows for Westbound Traffic: Take M-21 turn north on to Montcalm Avenue. Take Montcalm Avenue north to Flat River/(Sayles Road), go west on Flat River until you hit Vergennes, go west on Vergennes to Settlewood, take Settlewood South to M-21 then continue west.

The detour is as follows for Eastbound Traffic: Take M-21 turn north on Settlewood to Vergennes, go east on Vergennes until you hit Flat River/(Sayles Road), go east on Flat River, until you hit Montcalm go South on Montcalm until it dead ends in to M-21 continue eastbound.

DO NOT GO IN THE WATER IN A CANOE, KAYAK, SMALL BOAT, JET SKI OR ANY OTHER SMALL VESSEL. THE WATER IS VERY FAST AND UNKNOWN HAZARDS ARE PRESENT. FIRST RESPONDERS MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RESCUE YOU!
