GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – The U.S. Coast Guard urges people that the river systems in West Michigan are hazardous to recreational boaters.

The high flooding in Pere Marquette, White, Grand, Macatawa, and Kalamazoo Rivers can cause debris in the river system to destroy vessels. The high water levels also have the capability to move navigational aids off station.

According to Sector Field Officer Grand Haven Commanding Officer Sean Brady, the debris in the river includes plastic tubs and even entire trees.

Anyone who witnesses a hazard to navigation on a navigable waterway is advised to call the Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan Command Center at 414-747-7182.
