U-M President Among Highest Earning In New Report

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, Mary Sue Coleman makes the sixth most money of college presidents nationwide.

ANN ARBOR, Mich — The president of the University of Michigan is the only college president in Michigan whose compensation ranks in the top 10 nationwide.

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, Mary Sue Coleman made $918,783 in 2012. That means her base pay of $585,783 makes up just 63.8 percent of the total amount she made. Coleman comes in at sixth nationwide for her compensation.

Also on the new list are:

  • Lou Anna K. Simon, of Michigan State University with a total compensation for 2012 of $672,000 (26th place)
  • Allan Gilmour, of Wayne State University, at $506,027 (74th)
  • John M. Dunn, of Western Michigan University, at $471,351 (88th)
  • Gary D. Russi, of Oakland University, at $437, 500 (110th)
  • George E. Ross, of Central Michigan University, at $431,000 (112th)

Grand Valley State University President Thomas J. Haas is notably absent from the list.

The full list includes 212 chief executives, ranked from 191 public universities.

The top-earning college president was Penn State University’s Graham B. Spanier at $2,906,721 total compensation. Spanier made that much in the 2011 calendar year before he was let go.
