LAKE COUNTY, Mich. – The search continues for a former Grand Valley State University quarterback who went missing while fishing.

Cullen Finnerty, 30, hasn’t been seen since Sunday evening. He was visiting his family’s place at Bray Creek State Forest Campground, near the Baldwin area for the Memorial Day weekend.

The Sheriff’s department says the last anyone has heard of Finnerty was when he went fishing Sunday evening. That’s when they say he called his wife, telling her he was scared, and wandered off into the woods.

“I talked to his wife and his dad they said there’s no domestic problems, there’s nothing in the past that would lead us to believe that they had an argument and that he left,” said Lake County Undersheriff, Dennis Robinson.

During his time with GVSU, Finnerty became the winningest quarterback of all divisions in NCAA history. He helped lead the Lakers to three national titles from 2003 to 2006. He went on to spend some time in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens.

His family, friends, former teammates and coaches hope he is found safe.

“He was a fierce competitor but also a great teammate,” said Matt Mitchell, GVSU’s head football coach.

Finnerty is 6’3” and weighs about 235 pounds. He was last seen wearing waders, sweatpants and a T-shirt as he was fishing in the Baldwin River.

Anyone with information on his possible whereabouts is asked to call the Lake County Sheriff’s Office at (231)-745-2712
