gay-marriage-webLANSING, Mich — A state senator is proposing Michigan removes the ban on same-sex marriage.

Rebekah Warren (D- Ann Arbor), introduced the bill Wednesday.

In a release, she says it follows a new poll that shows a dramatic rise in support for gay marriage in Michigan. According to the Glengariff Group, 57 percent of Michigan voters now support it, up 13 points from just one year ago.

“The people of Michigan have spoken loud and clear, and they are fundamentally supportive of the idea that every person in our state should have the freedom to marry the person they love, ” Warren said in the media release. “This legislation will not only allow all couples to make a lifetime commitment to one another, but also extend important legal protections to them and their children.”

Warren supports removing this ban in order to allow for gay marriage, but also to:

  • Make sure same-sex couples have medical access in case of an emergency
  • Make sure both individuals in a same-sex couple could be legal parents to adoptive children
