Two Men Sentenced To Life For Murder Of GVSU Adviser

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.–The two men convicted of killing Grand Valley State University adviser Santiago Zapata Jr. were sentenced Wednesday afternoon in Kent County Circuit Court.

Maceo Scott and Timothy Miller, both 25,  had separate trials, but were both sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole.

They were  found guilty of felony murder and armed robbery,  involving the death of Zapata.

Last September, the 50-year-old adviser was found stabbed and beaten to death in his Grand Rapids home. His body had been there for days.

During the investigation, police determined both Scott and Miller knew Zapata and had been spending time with him prior to his death.

Zapata  worked as a GVSU adviser for several years and mentored young students in the community, inspiring them to pursue a college degree.
