NORTH MUSKEGON, Mich.– Two police officers were fired in North Muskegon and now the Michigan State Police are conducting their own criminal investigation.

North Muskegon Police Chief Tim Korabik says an internal investigation started at the department back in April and it was just a few weeks ago the Muskegon county prosecutor’s office asked the Michigan State Police to look into the case.

Chief Korabik says full-time officers Erin Baerman and Robert Brezina were fired on May 28 for “Violation of Rules and Regulations.” The chief wouldn’t say more than that as to why they were terminated but Michigan State Police say the officers are allegedly cheating on their payroll.

Michigan State Police say that the two were covering for each other when one of them went home, and then lying on their time cards about it. Chief Korbabik saaid Bearman worked at the department as a full-time officer for four-and-a-half years and Brezina for two-and-a-half years, he says there was never any issues with them before this.

“It’s a difficult situation especially in a smaller department like this because you all know each other well and you’re like family,” he said.

Michigan State Police are still investigating and nothing has been sent over to the prosecutor’s office yet.
