Muskegon, Mich. — Prosecutors say a man charged in a recent shooting in Muskegon Heights was a big part of a larger crime issue in the area.

They say the arrest of Curtis Brown was one more step in getting guns and violence off the streets.

The shooting happened in Muskegon Heights on June, 27.

Brown is being charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.

He was also involved with another gun violation that same day within an hour of the first incident.

A woman who wanted to remain anonymous told us about the problems in the area.

“It’s a lot of young men and sometimes young ladies have been involved in it,” said the resident. “Over the last year as far as the number of deceased young men that I know of, or shot, I’d say about five, six maybe seven or eight and all of them was drug related or they didn’t like them because they were gang associated or feuding.”

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Tim Maat spoke about the new task force that’s helping to curb that violence.

He said it was formed in February and has proven effective in solving crimes that span many jurisdictions.

He also praised the efforts of Muskegon Heights Officer Jennifer Tobin, who was responsible for Brown’s arrest following the shooting.

“The prosecutor’s office would like to commend Officer Tobin, also the other agencies that have worked very diligently, in the arrest of Mr Brown, which includes the sherff’s office and the Michigan State Police,” said Maat.

Brown is being held on a $150,000 bond.
