GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — If you are heading to Grand Haven for a day or evening at the beach, you could run into some serious traffic backups due to construction.

“It took way too long,” said Trisha Smith of Mount Pleasant.

That was the feeling from drivers who were trapped in a traffic jam on the way to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday at the big lake.

The traffic backup extended from the Coopersville exit on I-96 westbound all the way to the Nunica area.

The construction and closure of the Spring Lake exit appeared to cause confusion, and cause the traffic gridlock during peak hours on Thursday.

Drivers like Jordon Feeney said it took them about a half an hour to get through the snarl of traffic and into Spring Lake.

He suggested an alternative route to those heading there throughout the holiday weekend during peak hours.

There is an alternate route that’s marked as a detour off of the Coopersville exit that could save you time and engergy.

To take that detour, exit off I -96 West on the Coopersville exit, 16.

Take a right off the exit onto 68th Avenue

Follow the roundabout to the far left toward Cleveland Street, making sure you don’t get back on the highway.

Follow the orange detour signs from Coopersville to Nunica.

It only took us about six minutes to take that route Thursday afternoon.
