GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — Some beachgoers chose to play volleyball, hundreds of others chose to get their feet wet. Whatever the activity, it was a packed beachfront at Grand Haven State Park Saturday evening.

The temperatures brought a lot of people to the coast guard city. Some laid low in the shade.

Henry Goldner said it was “way too hot.” So he brought his kids to the splash pad, which allowed them to accomplish two things at once: stay cool and have fun.

The 90 degree temps (give or take) didn’t stop a couple of runners from getting in a workout. Lauren Houghen said, “It’s been hot, but we’re going to go swimming after. So it’s alright.”

On West Michigan’s hottest day this year so far, the consensus on beating the heat seemed to be ice cream and drinking lots of fluids. Kevin Johnson brought his family up from Detroit for the weekend. They joined one of several lines for ice cream. Most parlors in town were non-stop busy.

The Kent County Health Department also suggests the following:

  1. Stay hydrated
  2. Avoid alcohol
  3. Workout during cooler hours
  4. Use air conditioner/spend time in cooler places (malls and restaurants), Some locations serve as cooling centers
  5. Wear looser fitting clothing
  6. Wear a hat, take it easy, and stay out of the sun
  7. Don’t forget your pets. Make sure they’re in the shade and have water
