COOPERSVILLE, Mich. – One person is dead after striking a parked truck in Coopersville.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department tells FOX 17 the crash happened around 6:00 a.m. in the 100 block of River Street in Coopersville.

We are told the victim is a 20-year-old Coopersville man who was operating a moped. Police say that for some unknown reason, he struck the left rear corner of the trailer that was holding a pickup truck, and the 20-year-old had traumatic head injuries that proved fatal. It was dark and raining at the time and he was not wearing a helmet, but at this point, police say it is speculation as to what caused the crash.

River Street is a residential area with a 25 mph speed limit. Police say it is unclear how fast the 20-year-old was driving, but accident reconstructionists are working to determine his speed. They also say that the crash happened 15 minutes before any of the neighbors found him.

His name has not been released, pending family notification.
