WEST MICHIGAN — (FOX 17) — Sunday is the first day of September. Here is my monthly look at the normal weather, some of the records that exist, and the amount of daylight we lose.

TEMPERATURES: Normal highs fall from 78 degrees on the 1st to 67 on the 30th. Normal lows fall from 58 to 47.  The record high for September is 98 degrees, set on the 2nd in 1913 and the 16th in 1899.  The record low is 27, set on the 28th in 1991.

RAINFALL:  There is normally 4.28″ of rain in September. The wettest September was in 1986, when Grand Rapids received 11.85″.  The driest September is also the driest month in Grand Rapids weather history– 0.00″ in 1979.

LENGTH OF DAYLIGHT:  Here is a look at the sunrise/sunset times in September:

  • September 1: Sunrise at 7:07am, sunset at 8:17pm.  Length of daylight is 13 hours and 10 minutes
  • September 30:  Sunrise at 7:39am, sunset at 7:25pm.  Length of daylight is 11 hours and 46 minutes.

The loss of daylight in September is 1 hour and 24 minutes, the most of any month.
