Drought Status Update

WEST MICHIGAN — (FOX 17) — One week ago, we showed you that parts of West Michigan had entered the first stage of drought, termed “abnormally dry.”  An update Thursday from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows this area has expanded to the south and now includes parts of Kent and Muskegon Counties as well.

Here is a look at some of the rainfall totals since June 1 in West Michigan:

  • Grand Rapids:  9.63″, 2.18″ below normal
  • Muskegon:  8.56″, 0.18″ below normal
  • Holland:  9.48″, 1.59″ below normal.

Areas along and south of I-94 continue to have a surplus, though it has been shrinking. Kalamazoo’s total since June 1 is 14.04″, which is 1.86″ above normal. Battle Creek is 2.86″ above normal with 13.39″.
