BARRY COUNTY, Mich. — A man from Barry County was formally charged on Monday with assaulting his 63-year-old mother.

The woman was transferred to a Grand Rapids hospital Sunday evening where she was listed in critical condition. By Monday, her condition improved to serious.

According to police, the incident happened in the 400 block of State Street in Nashville, which is a village in Barry County.

A neighbor in the area told FOX 17 she answered the door when the victim came to her house asking for help.

“She pounded on the door, and when I opened it, she said ‘Help me, help me,’” Carol Thomas, a neighbor, said.

Thomas told FOX 17 that the woman was badly bruised and emotionally distraught, but that she was never told what happened that night.

“We heard some pounding noises and some furniture moving,” Thomas said. “But no arguing, no screaming, nothing.”

Christina Wells, another neighbor, said she often worried about the relationship Jeremy Gross had with his mother. She said the woman complained about her son’s past aggressive behavior.

“She was talking with us and telling us he had been really physical and verbally abusive with her too, screaming at her,” Wells said.

Gross was charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.

FOX 17 looked into Gross’s criminal background. He was also arrested in 2010 for assault. He later pleaded to a disturbing the peace charge.

Gross is expected to be back in court on September 18.
