GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Early risers around West Michigan and elsewhere were treated to a rare sight Thursday morning, as what appears to be a fragmenting meteor streaked across the pre-dawn sky.

As of 9:00 A.M., more than 60 reports of sightings had been posted on the American Meteor Society’s website.  Click here for the page for the event.

FOX 17 viewer John Eurich posted on the station’s Facebook page about the sight: “Did anyone see the Meteor (or whatever it was) this morning about 7:05AM. I was getting off at 131 and 68th and this big fire ball came shooting out of the sky straight and diagonally downward towards earth…had a big tail then fizzled out. Let me know what it was if you hear anything… Pretty sure I just witnessed a meteor crash into earth about 7 am… It was on fire, bright and had a big tail falling diagonally to earth on a very straight path…south of Byron center mi…I literally stopped at a green light to watch it…let me know if you hear anything I want to know what it was!”

The Grand Rapids National Weather Service office reported getting calls from across much of Ottawa County as well.

Here’s the Facebook comment thread for your sightings… feel free to post your own.  We’ll continue to search out any photos or video of the meteor and get them on later editions of FOX 17 News if we find them.
