GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder was in Grand Rapids talking to a group of business leaders on Wednesday and took some time to talk about what’s been happening in Washington.

Also, Wednesday, the Senate struck a deal raising the debt ceiling. This gives Democrats and Republicans time to work out a long-term fix.

Although Snyder said he thinks the choice to extend the debt ceiling is critically important, he told FOX 17 that Washington should never have let it get to this point.

“This has been a huge failure. There are no winners and Washington’s done a terrible job across the board,” Gov. Snyder said. “I’m proud to say Michigan’s a role model to do it the right way and so I would’ve encouraged them to look much more at the states, because Michigan’s not alone. We know how to balance a budget, we know how to pay down debt. They need to do the same things in Washington because we’re letting our citizens down with what’s going on there.”

Snyder also went on to say, “It’s better than not doing anything but they’re just kicking the can down the road for another 2 or 3 months and then how likely is this to occur again?”

All House Democrats voted in favor of the bill joined by 87 Republicans. In West Michigan, support was split: Representatives Justin Amash, Tim Walberg and Bill Huizenga voted against the deal. However, Representatives Dave Camp and Fred Upton supported the agreement.
