GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — “I had the gun in my pocket. I went in the front door. I went to the dude on the left. I told him to get up, go to the back of the bank.”
That statement comes from a larger confession made by accused Grand Rapids credit union robber Marcus Ewing.
In the rest of an FBI criminal complaint released Friday, Ewing said he robbed the Kent County Credit Union on Plainfield Avenue Thursday to help make child support payments and support his drug habit.
Earlier reports failed to specify whether Ewing, 41, was the robber or the getaway driver. This new document alleges that that driver was 36-year-old Dontray Jones, Ewing’s cousin.
Both men were arrested Thursday after a man in the credit union drive-thru witnessed the robbery and tipped off police. According to the court documents, Ewing approached an unmarked vehicle driven by a detective after the alleged robbery and asked for a ride. That detective called for back-up, and officers allegedly had to wrestle the Fort Wayne, Ind. man to the ground.
Jones, also from Indiana, was also spotted by police in an unspecified area near the scene. He claimed to be visiting people in the area and pointed to a random house. Police detained and arrested him after they said they proved that story false.
Police also allegedly found a bag of money, a handgun and a costume beard that Ewing wore when they discovered the vehicle allegedly used to flee the scene of the robbery.
