GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says more than 4,000 pedestrians are killed by vehicles every year.

November is National Running Safety Month and outdoor stores around West Michigan, including MC Sports, are promoting runner visibility out on the pavement.

As it gets darker earlier, whether you’re biking, walking or running, there are several precautions to help make sure you aren’t one of those victims.

Other than the typical reflective vest, there are also reflective ankle bands you can wear.  Car headlights pick up your feet first, and that’s the first area a driver can see reflectivity.

If you’re walking or jogging with a dog, make sure to light them up too.

“You need to know where you’re going to run, is it going to be dark, is it going to be light?” Rob Henderhan of MC Sports said.

If you are heading out in the dark you should let someone know where you’re going.  Carry identification and turn down music so you can hear your surroundings and remember there’s power in numbers.

Running groups also say it’s important to stay alert, change-up your routine and always cross at crosswalks.

They also suggest making eye contact with drivers at intersections, so you know they’re aware you’re about to cross the road.
