WEST MICHIGAN — (FOX 17) — After high temperatures early Monday in the 40s, an Arctic cold front passed through with small amounts of rain and snow and a big blast of cold air.

This cold air blowing over the relatively warm waters of Lake Michigan is generating lake-effect snow showers. Since winds are mainly from the north, only a few areas right along the lakeshore will be impacted. There is a lake-effect snow advisory in effect until 10AM Tuesday for western Van Buren County, as well as western sections of Oceana and Mason Counties. Accumulations of over four inches are possible in these areas, with lesser amounts inland.

This image from our in-house computer model, Future Track, shows the setup very well. The hardest-hit areas should be in Van Buren and Berrien Counties in Southwest Lower Michigan, extending to around Michigan City, Ind.

If you have travel plans to Chicago tonight or Tuesday, there could be some slow-going along I-196 in Van Buren and Berrien Counties, as well as I-94 in Berrien County into Northwest Indiana. Traveling north to Ludington or Traverse City could also be affected by heavy snow.
