West Michigan Veterans Day Activities

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.– There are a number of ways to honor our local war heroes and service men and women in West Michigan on Monday, Veterans Day.

The Union High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) will conduct an honor guard. The honor guard will be stationed at Union High School’s war memorial wall, which commemorates Union High alumni who gave their lives during World War II. The students will also have a slide show playing with information about the soldiers on the memorial.

The honor guard is from 8 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. at Union High School, located at 1800 Tremont Blvd NW in Grand Rapids.

Davenport University and its chapter of the Student Veterans of America (SVA) is celebrating Veteran’s Day  on its W.A. Lettinga Campus in Grand Rapids. Members of the military will be displaying vehicles and equipment like those currently being used overseas. Visitors will be able to sign a Davenport University flag and write letters to deployed DU students currently serving in combat.

The event begins at 10:30 a.m. with color guard displays color and guest speaker. A moment of silence follows at 11, with a free hot-dog lunch, military displays and kids activities immediately after. It’s located at Davenport University’s Robert W. Sneden Center, First Floor, W.A. Lettinga Campus, 6191 Kraft Ave. SE.

Dégagé Ministries will honor the areas homeless vets with a dinner and pinning ceremony. It will 6 – 8 pm. at Dégagé, 144 Division Avenue South in downtown Grand Rapids.

The students at Cornerstone University are receiving thousands of bookmarks from the Family Christian stores which represent Bibles donated. They are volunteering to place each one of the bookmarks into a brand new Bible that was just printed locally at Dickinson Press. They’re inviting you and your family to volunteer with the students to honor our Military’s sacrifice.

This event includes a brief ceremony with representatives from Cornerstone, Biblica, Dickinson Press, and Family Christian, as well as U.S. Army Colonel William Henson, who is the Command Chaplain for the entire State of Michigan.

It starts at 7 p.m at the Cornerstone University Field House, located at 1001 E. Beltline Avenue NE in Grand Rapids.

And in Battle Creek, Kellogg Community College is celebrating the service of U.S. military veterans by designating November Honor Our Veterans Month.

Veteran-centered events held throughout the month will include a Veterans Day Celebration from noon to 12:45 p.m. Nov. 11 in the Student Center; a special Veterans Art Exhibit displayed in the College’s Morris Learning Resource Center (LRC) through Nov. 29; and a Veterans Speaker Series event beginning at 3 p.m. every Monday in November in the LRC’s Spring Lake Room.

All events are free and will take place on KCC’s North Avenue campus, 450 North Avenue.
