ALLEGAN COUNTY, Mich. — Anthony McFarlane, an Afghanistan veteran from Allegan County, has pleaded no contest in a January stabbing case.

McFarlane, 22, made the plea to an assault misdemeanor after initially being charged with attempted murder.

As part of this deal, McFarlane will be able to keep his veteran medical benefits and continue treatment for his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  He cited PTSD as a factor in the assault.

McFarlane pleaded no contest to stabbing 30-year-old Adam Laws after an altercation in Otsego.

Court documents show that McFarlane and three of his friends that were present told police that Laws instigated the altercation, but he claimed McFarlane was the aggressor.

A judge temporarily agreed to the no contest plea, but they will re-meet Feb. 10 to finalize the agreement.
