WYOMING, Mich. — The city of Wyoming will be getting equipment for their own crime testing lab. On Monday night the city council approved $100,000 to go towards the project.

The Wyoming Police Department said the lab will be up and running in six months to a year, with accreditation following that. The department also said it already has the staff to operate the lab.

The goal of the lab is to speed up the process for substance and blood testing. Tests are predicted be final within 48 hours versus the current two weeks.

City Manager Curtis Holt said too often officers “waste” time by attending court hearings that get postponed pending test results.

Detective Lt. Joe Steffes with the Wyoming PD said for each substance test performed, the department will receive a reimbursement from the state. He predicts the full $100,000 will be paid back within seven years.
