GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Experts at Jacobson Heating and Cooling said there are some simple tips homeowners should follow to keep their furnaces working properly.

Vice President of Sales, Tom Vanderson said that homeowners should make sure they change their air filters often. Vanderson said that if you have a simple one inch filter, this should be changed once a month.

Vanderson also said it’s important to change the batteries in a digital thermostat at least once a year. Vanderson said that a if the batteries aren’t running properly, it could force your furnace to shut down completely.

Vanderson emphasizes the importance of keeping air pipes clear in higher powered furnaces. Vanderson said that snow can often times block these pipes, which can cause the furnace to shut down.

Consumers Energy said that you can save five percent on your bill for every degree you lower your thermostat.
