NEWAYGO, Mich. — Four firefighters and a board member abruptly quit during a Newaygo meeting last week.

According to City Manager Jon Schneider, the resignations were tendered during the public comment portion of the Dec. 12 fire board meeting.  He said the department will be filling the vacancies over the next few weeks.

Former fire chief Tim Cronk, a nearly 30-year veteran of the department, was one of those who quit.  The reason for the resignations is unclear.

Schneider said the board had been dealing with some personnel issues, and nothing unusual happened at the meeting until public comment.  The former firefighters and board member have not made any official statements.
