WEST MICHIGAN — Another new month has started, and here is a look at some of the normal January weather, as well as the records that exist.

TEMPERATURES:  Normal highs this month start at 31 degrees, drop to 30 degrees from the 14th through the 25th, then rise back to 31 for the remainder of the month. Normal lows start at 20 on the 1st and drop to 18 degrees by the end of the month.  The record high for January is 68 degrees, which occurred on the 22nd 1894.  The record low was nearly 100 years later, when on the 19th in 1994, the low was 22 below.

PRECIPITATION: There is normally 2.09 inches of precipitation this month. The wettest January was in 1897, when 4.88 inches fell. The driest was in 1956, when only 0.29 of an inch fell.

SNOWFALL: The normal January snowfall is 20.8 inches, but the record is 46.8 inches set back in 1999.

LENGTH OF DAYLIGHT:  Here is a look at the sunrise, sunset, and length of daylight in January:

  • 1st:  sunrise 8:14am;  sunset 5:19pm;  length of daylight 9 hours and 5 minutes
  • 31st:  sunrise 7:59am;  sunset 5:54pm;  length of daylight 9 hours and 55 minutes

This results in a gain of 50 minutes of daylight.
