PORTAGE, Mich.- Many businesses up and down S. Westnedge in Portage had notes on their door, expressing that they were closed due to the “snow emergency”.

A sign on the door at IHOP read, “Sorry we are closed due to state of emergency, for the safety of our guests and employees. We will be reopening Tuesday morning 6 am. Again guests, sorry for any inconvenience.”  A similar sign was found on the neighboring Sherwin-Williams, too. A security member with The Crossroads Mall said as of 6 a.m., they still planned on opening.

The Courtyard Marriott had plenty of rooms to offer for guests who felt it was too dangerous to maneuver on I-94. Not many trickled in overnight and actually, they had another problem on their hands; guests who booked rooms prior to the storm, never showed up. As the guests who were waiting out the storm slept, FOX17 saw a caravan of Kalamazoo County road trucks tag teaming I-94, in both directions. However, blowing winds basically erased much of the progress they had made.

If you have to head out, and only if it is absolutely necessary, a useful number to call is the Michigan State Police Travel Advisory Hotline: (800)381-8477.
