Mushing In West MichiganFOWLER, Mich. — It’s a sport that is more common in Alaska than in West Michigan but one Fowler woman is working to bring the sport of dog sledding to those in the Great Lakes state.

Lynzie Bacchus has been dog sled racing for almost 20 years. It was an unconventional start when she fell in love with the sport after watching a race in Mackinaw and decided to try it right there. She says she was hooked from the beginning and her love for the sport and her dogs took her all the way to Alaska where she competed in the Junior Iditarod.

Bacchus was the first and only musher from Michigan and only junior musher who trained and raised her own dogs. It’s Bacchus’ love for the sport and her dogs that made her open her own kennel back at home. Lady Luck Kennel now trains a new generation of dogs and mushers and helps spread the love of a century’s old sport.

While the sport may not be as popular in Michigan as it is in Alaska, there are still plenty of ways to get involved. The Great Lakes Sled Dog Association sponsors many family-friendly events and races across the state in January and February. But if you’re not ready to take to the races, Lyndzie also gives sled rides throughout the winter and with all this fresh snow it is the perfect time for it.
